Co-Athletes Of The Week For 10/18-10/23: Grace Brady, Arielle Hill & Rachel Owens

This week’s Athletes of the Week are seniors Grace Brady, Arielle Hill, and Rachel Owens from the varsity volleyball team. Rachel has played on the varsity volleyball team for four years, while Grace and Arielle have played since coming to Walsingham three years ago.

Last week, the Trojans had one of the most exciting wins of the fall season as they defeated Summit Christian Academy in four sets on Friday, Oct. 22. Prior to this game, the Trojans had not won since October 2018, and had not won a set since October 2019. The last several seasons saw a lot of hard work go unrewarded in the win column, but that all came to an end on Friday night.

The Trojans saw themselves down 24-18 in the first set before going on a late run to come back and win the first set, 27-25. The excitement of their first-set win carried over into the second set which saw the Trojans go on to win 25-22. After the Eagles of Summit Christian came back to win the third set 25-19, the Trojans finished off the game with a 25-23 win in the fourth set to seal the victory, leading to a celebration joined by parents and fans on the court immediately after the final point. This win ended a streak of 45 consecutive losses over the last three seasons and was a true testament to the hard work of the whole team, especially the three seniors that have helped keep the program going over the last several years.

Grace is the setter for this year’s team and she is a leader by providing a positive attitude, effort, teamwork, and kindness to others. Her reliable serves and block touches are crucial to the team. Arielle plays in the middle for the Trojans and was selected by her teammates as a captain for her leadership in skill, commitment to showing up, and treating every teammate with respect. She is an excellent server and a strong hitter and passer as well. Rachel also played middle this year, a new position to her that she learned quickly. Her athleticism, quick reaction time, and good instincts for the game make her a key piece for the Trojans.

In addition to their win on Friday, the Trojans also hosted “Dig Pink” night for their game against Hampton Roads Academy. The team raised more than $700, which will be donated to the “Here for the Girls” charity supporting breast cancer research.

The Trojans will finish their season with a TCIS matchup against Cape Henry on Thursday, Oct. 28.

Congratulations Grace, Arielle, and Rachel, and Go Trojans!
