This week’s Athlete of the Week is Sallie Brooks ’24 from the varsity girls’ tennis team. This is Sallie’s fifth year playing tennis for the Trojans and her second season on the varsity team.
Last week, the Trojans’ lone match came on Friday, Sept. 10, against the Veritas School. Sallie played in the #4 singles slot for the Trojans in the match and showed exceptional determination throughout the contest. She started the ten game pro set slowly, going down 1-4, but found her patience and rhythm as the match progressed. Her baseline play was outstanding as she battled her way back against a very evenly matched opponent. Playing many long and well constructed points, Sallie used her cross court forehand to hit the corners and pressure her opponent into errors.
With the overall match tied at 4-4, both teams and spectators crowded along the back fence to watch Sallie and her opponent battle it out for the deciding point. Sallie clinched the day by winning her fifth attempt at match point (10-8), securing the 5-4 victory for the team. With a loud cheer from the crowd, both teams rushed the court to congratulate the athletes for such an amazing and well-balanced competition. As coach Erik Wright said, “It was certainly one of the most exciting ways to finish a tennis duel and a great day for Trojans’ tennis!”
The Trojans are 2-1 to start their season and continue with matches against HRA and Saint Gertrude this week.
Congratulations Sallie, and Go Trojans!
