This week’s Athlete of the Week is Sarah Newman ’22 from the varsity field hockey team. Sarah has played field hockey for the Trojans for the last four years and is one of the captains for this year’s team.
Last week, the Trojans opened their season with games against Jamestown High School and Bruton High School. The Trojans pulled off a thrilling 3-2 overtime victory over Jamestown and defeated Bruton 2-0 in their home opener. Sarah’s performance at the Jamestown game was outstanding as she consistently hustled and was able to contribute offensively as well as recover to her defensive position with ease. With the game tied at the end of regulation, the teams moved to a 7v7 sudden victory format. Sarah helped lead the Trojans’ defense during the overtime and was vital in getting the ball up the field and out of the Trojans’ defensive end. When her teammate Elizabeth Hamner ’24 was fouled by the goalie, Sarah stepped up to take the penalty stroke for the Trojans. Sarah rose to the occasion and placed a shot perfectly in the bottom left corner of the goal to secure the Trojans’ victory!
Not only has Sarah excelled on the field, but her leadership and attitude have made her an integral part of the Trojans’ field hockey program.
“Sarah’s leadership skills have been present since the very first day of field hockey preseason at the beginning of August," head coach Emily Mauk said. "She consistently showed up to morning and afternoon practices and pushes her teammates to be their best selves. Sarah’s performance on the field has been exemplary. However, I am more proud of Sarah’s leadership and attitude with her teammates.”
The Trojans look to continue their hot start to the season with games this week against Bruton and Saint Gertrude’s.
Congratulations Sarah, and Go Trojans!!
