This week, the Athlete of the Week is Noelle Kokolis from the varsity girls’ basketball team. Noelle been a member of the varsity team since her eighth-grade year and was elected a captain for this year’s team.

The varsity girls’ basketball team had their work cut out for them this week. With three away games and the first TCIS games of the year, the Trojans had a busy and tough schedule. The week started out playing at Norfolk Academy where the Trojans originally took the lead. However, an older Norfolk Academy team quickly bounced back and had control of the game up until the last minute. Thanks to a fourth quarter comeback by the Trojans, the game ended regulation in a tie. Noelle’s confidence and stability on the court was key in keeping the Trojans in the game during overtime. She made some tough shots at the end and showed off her composure by making critical foul shots at the end of the game. The Trojans won 44-40!

After that exciting win in Norfolk, the Trojans travelled on Thursday to play down at Cape Henry. Knowing this game would be another battle, the team looked to Noelle for her leadership and positive attitude throughout the entire game. After a hard start, the Trojans looked to have control over the game, but a scoring drought in the third quarter opened an opportunity for the Dolphins to take the advantage. Cape Henry began making some difficult three pointers and the Trojans had to adjust defensively. Noelle was relied on to handle the ball with an immense amount of pressure and again came up with critical shots. After Hailey Diggs ’24 made the three-pointer to give the Trojans the one-point advantage with 20 seconds left in the game, Noelle was fouled and put the Trojans up by two. She kept the team grounded on defense and the Trojans walked away with the 37-35 win!

Then on Friday, the Trojans kept their streak of close and exciting games going when they travelled to Isle of Wight. One may have expected Noelle to be fatigued from playing two intense games earlier in the week without any substitution, however, she remained her normal self, displaying the highest degree of grit, determination, and composure. Isle of Wight held the lead at halftime. The Trojans needed to adjust. To start the fourth quarter, the Chargers drained some threes and the Trojans chances were not looking great. However, Noelle gave it her all and played some great basketball. The Trojans went up with a few minutes left the in game thanks to denial defense by Sophia Gerry ‘27. Noelle worked with her teammates to possess the ball, forcing Isle of Wight to foul. Noelle went five for seven on her foul shots at the end of the game and sealed the deal for the third time this week as the Trojans won 35-32!

Some may say that the Trojans had luck on their side this past week, however, the real factor in their success was Noelle Kokolis. Her hard work and desire to win paid off in all three games.

The varsity girls’ basketball team will travel to Richmond on Thursday, January 19th to play Veritas School. The last game the Trojans played Veritas in was another close one with the Trojans out-edging Veritas by one point earlier this season. The girls’ team is currently 8-4 and looks to replicate VISAA tournament appearance from last year.

Congratulations Noelle and Go Trojans!
