The Walsingham varsity basketball teams hosted Suffolk Christian Academy on Friday night in their final doubleheader before Christmas break. After a 73-18 win by the JV Boys, the varsity teams kept the momentum going with strong performances of their own.
Varsity Girls Final: Walsingham 45, Suffolk Christian 25
Strong second and third quarters propelled the Trojans to win #2 of their season. After trailing by a point after the first quarter, the Trojans outscored the Knights by a score of 27-6 over the next two quarters to build a commanding lead. The Trojans caused 39 turnovers on the night and held their opponent to just 15 percent shooting from the field.
Julia Wilson '22 had an incredible game for the Trojans, scoring 21 points while adding 12 rebounds, 8 blocks, and 6 steals. Olivia LeJeune '20 also impressed with 14 points, 6 rebounds, 4 assists, and 7 steals. Clara Riggs '23 and Rachel Owens '22 combined for 6 points and 20 rebounds. Becky Villeda '22 rounded out the scoring for the Trojans with 4 points.
The Trojans are now 2-4 on the year and will host Tidewater Academy on Wednesday, Dec. 19, at 4:30 p.m. in their final game of 2018.
Varsity Boys Final: Walsingham 58, Suffolk Christian 19
Walsingham jumped out to a 20-4 start in the first quarter and never looked back as they cruised to their seventh win of the season. The highlight of the night came from Senior Braden Exton as he threw down a highlight reel dunk while drawing the foul on a fastbreak.
The Trojans held Suffolk Christian to 19 percent shooting and had 17 steals, resulting in a 22-0 advantage in transition points. A balanced effort saw nine of the 10 Trojans score on the night, led by Jaylin Stewart '19 with 13 points on 6 of 7 shooting. Sam Jones filled up the stat sheet with 4 points, 9 rebounds, 5 assists, 7 deflections, and 3 steals in just 17 minutes of action. Henrikas Kalnius '21 played well on both ends of the court and had 10 points to go with 7 rebounds. Paul Williams '22 had a season high with both 8 points and 6 rebounds. Also scoring for the Trojans were Marcus Banks '21 (8), Braden Exton (7), Jackson Hughes '22 (3), Liam Miller '19 (3), and Lincoln Lubsen '21 (2).
Walsingham is now 7-1 this season and will look to continue their hot start over Christmas break as they play in the Peninsula Catholic Tournament on 12/20-12/22 and the Benedictine Tournament on 12/27-12/29.
