Varsity Field Hockey hosted Bruton High School at this year's Under the Lights game at William & Mary's Busch Field on Saturday night. The Trojans came into the game riding a 2-game winning streak after defeating St. Margaret's and Norfolk Collegiate earlier in the week. The Trojans' community was out in full force for the game and the large crowd went home happy as the Trojans emerged victorious.
Walsingham opened the game on the attack, immediately pressuring the Bruton defense, but despite earning several short corners, the Trojans remained scoreless for the first 20 minutes of the game. After earning another corner with just over five minutes remaining in the half, Margie Ehrhardt '20 passed the ball into the Trojans' leading scorer, Martha Page Norsworthy '20, at the top of the circle, where she lifted a shot into the top of the goal to give the Trojans a 1-0 lead. The score held at 1-0 going into halftime thanks to several impressive saves by the Bruton goalie.
The second half again saw the Trojans control possession. The ball stayed near the Bruton goal for almost the entire 30 minutes, but the Trojans were never able to pad their lead. However, the Trojans lead was never in too much danger and when the final horn sounded, the Trojans prevailed with a 1-0 victory!
The Trojans are now 7-5 on the season, and have won three consecutive games as they head into their final week of conference play before the TCIS and VISAA playoffs. The Trojans will host Hampton Roads Academy on Tuesday, 10/23, at 4:00 pm before heading to play Steward in their final regular season game on Thursday, 10/25.
Prior to Saturday's game, the Trojans honored their four seniors and their families with a brief Senior Night ceremony.
