This week's Athlete of the Week is Sam Jones '19. Sam is a member of the varsity boys basketball team and this is his fourth year on the team.
Last week, Sam had an outstanding performance against Tabb to help lead the Trojans to a convincing 80-57 victory. Sam finished with 23 points on just 11 shots, while also adding nine rebounds, six assists, and six steals. His energy on both ends of the court caused problems for his opponent all night.
Going into the game against Tabb, Sam needed 16 points to reach 1,000 points for his career. After a very hot start that saw him scoring with layups, free throws, and from beyond the three-point line, Sam went to the free throw line late in the second quarter and knocked down the first of two shots to reach this impressive milestone.
Sam reached the milestone over the course of 104 games during his four- year career, 77 of which the Trojans have emerged victorious. Sam becomes the second member of the current team to reach the 1,000 point mark, joining fellow Senior Jaylin Stewart in this prestigious club.
The Trojans are now 11-5 after defeating Nansemond-Suffolk Academy 58-46 on Jan. 8 to kick off the TCIS portion of their schedule.
Congratulations Sam, and Go Trojans!!
