Walsingham Academy
PreK4 – 7th Grade Extended Care Program
2009-2010
Welcome to Extended Care for the 2009-2010 school year!

Mission Statement

The Extended Care Program provides an opportunity for children to participate in recreational activities (indoor and outdoor), enrichment experiences, arts and crafts, and supervised free time to explore many educational and socially focused activities.

Daily Operation Hours

Hours are 2:55PM to 6:00PM daily and 12:00PM to 6:00PM on early dismissal days. Students must bring a lunch on early dismissal days. The program will begin Monday, August 25, 2008 and run through Wednesday, June 3, 2009. Please consult the school calendar for days in which Extended Care does not operate. If students through grade 7 are not picked up in carline by 3:20PM, they will be checked into Extended Care. At that time, parents will be responsible for payment for that day.

Registration and Fees

Parents are asked to register students prior to their attendance in the program. Registration forms are available in the Lower School office. Families may participate in one of two payment plans:
1) Semester Rate: $750.00 – one child, $1,050.00 – two or more children. Semester participants are asked to make payment for the first semester at the time of registration. The second payment is due at the beginning of the 2nd semester in January.
2) Daily Rate: $11.00 – one child, $4.00 – each additional child (same day). Daily participants must render payment on the day of attendance.
Payment may be sent to the Lower School office in the morning or brought to the program when the student is picked up. Unless prior arrangements have been made with the director of the program, payment is due on a daily basis.
**Please note: If a child is picked up after 6:00PM, a late fee of $1.00 per minute late will be assessed. If a history of late pick-ups occur, a child may be asked not to return to the program.

Authorization to Pick Up Your Child

For the safety of your child, no child will be released to anyone without written parental/guardian permission via the registration form or written note. There will be no exceptions to this rule. Anyone picking up a child needs to sign out in the attendance book. This book will be with the director or one of the counselors. An extra few minutes in your pick up process helps ensure the safety of your child.

Health

A healthy snack is provided each day. If a child has special dietary needs or restrictions, the child is welcome to bring an appropriate personalized snack.

Extended Care staff will dispense emergency medication as required according to guidelines in the Family Handbook. First aid will be administered by staff members for an accident which appears to be minor in nature. In emergency situations the program director will attempt contact using the telephone number provided on the registration form to receive specific instructions. If this cannot be done, the staff will act according to their best judgment for the welfare of the child.

A Day in the Life of Extended Care
Times are approximate and subject to change due to inclement weather or special activity.

2:55PM - 3:15PM Students will arrive in the cafeteria after dismissal and will be given a snack and beverage. You may pack a separate snack if you wish. Food and drink must be finished in the allotted snack time. During this time attendance is taken, announcements regarding the day’s activities are made and there is usually time for unstructured social interaction and discussion of the day’s events.

3:15PM – 4:15PM All students and staff go outside for structured and unstructured outdoor activities. Most structured activity is modified to allow all age groups to participate fully. Emphasis is on group cooperation and the maximization of individual success rather than competition.

4:15PM - 5:00PM Students return indoors for organized arts and crafts activities, group games, board games, quiet reading time.

5:00PM - 6:00PM In accordance with the philosophy that homework is to be an interactive process between parent and student in the home environment, students in grades 4-7 may begin homework at 4:30PM and younger students may begin at 5:00PM. Students must have all the necessary books, study materials and assignments with them. They will not be permitted to return to their classrooms. Once the students finish their homework, they may begin or continue with an activity.

We are looking forward to the many varied and exciting projects that Extended Care will bring this school year!
